Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro is all about the beautiful beaches from the sporty Copacabana to the scenic Ipanema. I stayed in the Ipanema area all three trips, highly recommend with its close proximity to restaurants and beaches .
Getting to see Cristo Redentor up close in person was remarkable. The tall statue is situated at the top of a mountain peak; in taking the inexpensive way up, I rode a bus to the base of the mountain where I then took an escalator train up the steep mountain side covered in tropical trees and vegetation. The views atop were breathtaking, see the city of Rio from high above, with low hanging clouds covering various hills and mountain peaks, such as Sugarloaf.
Another part of Rio is the Lapa area, where a lot of the city culture can be experienced and seen with street murals. The most well-known tourist attraction here is the Escadaria Selaron, the colorful tiled stairway. Everything was hand laid out by Jorge Selaron himself. What’s awesome is that various cities from literally all over the world sent in colorful tiles with art and graphics representing their city and was ultimately included in the stairway design.
