Hong Kong

12 hours in Hong Kong means not a much time at all to explore and experience what this great place has to offer. Given the 12 hours were during the daytime, the entire other half (nighttime) of Hong Kong was missed. One more reason to revisit and spend much more time and see the skyline lit up with its signature lights and neon signs of the busy commercial districts and outdoor night markets. Given it was early February and only a week before the Chinese New Year, everywhere you went, there were lots of festive decorations, lanterns, the color red and designs for the year of the dog.

Hong Kong is world renowned for their food and what’s better than Dim Sum at one of the most popular and most talked about places: Tim Ho Wan, a Michelin starred restaurant recommended to me by a good foodie friend. The queue to get seated was about 30+ minutes but for good food, well worth it.

Tian Tan Buddha, Lantau Island

Very close to Hong Kong city and the Kowloon part of Hong Kong lies Lantau Island. This island is quite the opposite of the busy scene one associates Hong Kong with. Lots of greenery, mountains and small villages makes the island a must see place for travelers, especially with the main attraction, Tian Tan Buddha. This giant bronze Buddha statue sits 34 meters tall atop a hill in the Ngong Ping village area, near the Po Lin Monastery. A visit up here gives you great views of Lantau Island and the traditional monastery buildings below in the village.
