Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Australia
Realizing that holding a Koala bear in Sydney wasn’t possible because of laws around it in the state of New South Wales, I decided to make the flight up to the Gold Coast region of Australia. In addition to the scenic Gold Coast region, I visited the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, home to many indigenous animals of Australia such as koalas and kangaroos amongst many others. One of the highlights was paying money to hold a koala bear for a few minutes and get a photo taken with it. Just about the most touristy thing there is but given that I flew all the way from Sydney just to do this, it had to happen. The koala bears are surprisingly pretty heavy animals for their size, at least the one I held. They are very soft and fluffy which was fun to hold them.

Also had a chance to do some Rainbow Lorikeet feeding while at the sanctuary. All of these lorikeets are wild and aren’t contained within the sanctuary. They come and go as they please but given the daily feedings, they’ve more of less developed a routine and visitors can see flocks of them as soon as you hold out a tray of feed. What is also super neat is that the kangaroos here are free roaming around a designated area. You can get as close to them as you want and buy food for them as well. They more or less just lounged around in the grassy areas finding shaded areas to relax and cool off.
